That information is the Word of God. The Word allows each of us to see life as God intended to be from the beginning. The Word is dynamic, and it must continue to be shared, and it will. Instead of us posting here on this site that has served the spreading of the Word so greatly, we will now be posting from WWW.PROVEALLTHINGS.US.

Our brother Benjamin Bruce has so generously designed and built this new site, and we are especially grateful for his good work. Even though our online "headquarters" have changed, our commitment to the Word and the kingdom of God and to Jesus Christ has not wavered. We will continue to provide (for all who will read), material that sheds light on the ancient texts that serve as the foundation of our faith. For all who are regular readers, we are grateful for your patience, and hope that you will visit us at Prove All Things!

biblical

What words do you use to describe your faith? Exciting? User-friendly? Evangelical? Liberal? Conservative? Moderate? Mainstream?

If you answered to any of the above descriptions, I would be interested in hearing your reasoning behind your answer. See, recently, I've been trying to find words that help describe authentic Christian faith, and hopefully words that describe my own faith in and relationship with God.

The very first word that came to mind was: BIBLICAL.

What is a system of belief without the Bible? Absolutely dead! The writer of Hebrews described the word of God as "living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword". There is great power and life in God's word! The Bible is indeed the greatest Book ever written.

Its Author is God.

Its message is universal.

Its truth is timeless.

Peter wrote that, "men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit". Paul described the Sacred Writings as "words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit".

The foundation of Christian faith resides in the words of Jesus Christ. At one time, God spoke to the fathers by the prophets, "but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world". By the words of Jesus, the world will be judged.

Any person desiring to follow Jesus must be willing to be a "doer of the word". Those who hear the word but do not practice it have "deluded themselves". If an individual's religion is not based upon the Jesus' word, the Bible, that individual has a counterfeit religion. Therefore my friend, authentic Christian faith is first and foremost, Biblical.

"THE SUM OF YOUR WORD IS TRUTH, AND EVERY ONE OF YOUR RIGHTEOUS RULES ENDURES FOREVER" (Psalm 119:160).

Send Your Reign

What is the kingdom to you? Is it something that is coming in the not-too-distant future? Is it exclusively the church? Is it exclusively heaven? Clearly, there are lots of ideas of who, what, and where the kingdom of God is.

Interestingly enough, amidst all of the conflicting ideas and theology that surround the issue, God's word is very clear concerning the kingdom: it is God's right to rule. The kingdom is God's sovereignty.

Forecasting Reign

Concerning the kingdom, Jesus spoke of it often. In reference to it's inception on earth, Jesus made this statement, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power". Jesus knew that God's rule among men was about to ensue.

His public ministry began with the proclamation of the kingdom. For forty days prior to His three year preaching, Satan tempted Jesus with material prosperity and comforts. Satan attempted to lure Him into serving him by offering Him all of the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Jesus refused his offer though. At this point, Jesus began preaching about the coming rule of God (Matthew 4:1-17).

Praying for Reign

One day, Jesus' students asked Him how they ought to pray. His response was,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil"

In the original language, "on earth as it is in heaven" is modified by three phrases: "Your will be done", "Your kingdom come", and "Your name is hallowed".

So, in this passage, Jesus tells us to pray for God's rule to come and permeate our lives, not just to pray that the church would be established. The model prayer of Matthew 6 is not obsolete as some believe, but it is very relevant seeing that we are all in need of God's rule and sovereignty in our lives.

The Nature of Reign

Paul wrote this about the kingdom, "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit". Eating and drinking are things we do to sustain our physical bodies, and Paul says here that God's kingdom is the opposite. In a nutshell, God's rule is not physical, but is spiritual in nature.

Jesus is recorded as saying, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world". From the mouth of the Lord Himself we learn about the nature of the kingdom: It is His, and it does not belong to the world.

The kingdom originates with God in heaven. A person that is willing to surrender his will for God's will is a subject to His rule in his life. Peter said, "In your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy". God's reign in the human heart is a matter of a person abdicating his personal throne and allowing Him to take the rule.

Reign Gauges

How can a person know whether he is a part of God's rule and kingdom? See, soon after Jesus began preaching that the "kingdom of God is near you", He announced the qualities that kingdom citizens must possess. Here are a few questions that we can ask from that amazing sermon that He preached on a mountainside:

Are you poor in spirit? In order for Jesus to rescue a person from the heinous consequences of sin, that person must recognize that Jesus alone can save. This means forfeiting personal pride and acknowledging that life without Him is empty of meaning and substance. That is why He said, "Happy are those who are poor in spirit, for heaven's kingdom is theirs!"

Are you hungry in appetite? Just as we need food and water for physical sustenance, we require the food of God's word to survive spiritually. A person who neglects Scripture study, prayer, and fellowship, is neglecting the spiritual food that Christ offers. That is why Jesus said, "Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied!"

Are you empty of self? Jesus demands that His followers be willing to forfeit all for His sake and glory. He said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me". That is the joy of serving Him: self-denial for His glory and honor. No good citizen ever disobeys the ruling of his king, and no faithful servant of Christ ever substitutes His rule for personal rule.

Are you full of love? Love is the mark of true kingdom citizenship. John wrote, "So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world". Disciples of the Master are known by their love for Him and each other (John 13:34-35). A person who appreciates God's love will reciprocate it into the lives of others.

"I'm Not Ashamed to Own My Lord"

One proverb says that if you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything. Isn't that true? If a person does not have the backbone, conviction, and courage to stand for truth, he will fall for lies and deception. If a Christian fails to stand for Jesus, he will fall for the dangerous tricks of Satan himself. Let us consider these words from the New Testament:

"As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ASHAMED, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death."

"For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

"Therefore DO NOT BE ASHAMED OF THE TESTIMONY about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God....which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me"

Shame is a huge barrier to a Christian's personal impact for Christ, that's why it is addressed so much in the New Testament. Among the long list of the ungodly who will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, are cowards. Imagine that! Cowards are in the same boat as murderers, sorcerers, fornicators, and liars. Interesting.

One of the beautiful aspects of Paul's last statement above is his sense of knowledge and conviction. He said "I know" and "I am convinced". Paul was a man who refused to compromise his confidence in Jesus. He refused to be ashamed of the Lord and His glorious gospel (Romans 1:16), because he knew the power that the good news about Jesus contains. With confidence come knowledge and conviction.

As school begins, it will be a struggle for many of us to be courageous and strong enough to take a stand for the cause of Jesus Christ. Peter said,

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world"

Take courage from the fact that brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world are experiencing the same difficulties and challenges that you are. Whether it be pressure to use bad language, to dress immodestly, to attend filthy dances and proms, or to simply not stand for truth when the opportunity arises.

As we enter this new year, I hope the CONFIDENCE and CONVICTION that we find in Jesus will rest in each one of our hearts.

The Benefits of Living a Double Life

Man, it is hard to please your friends and be a Christian at the same time! I do my best to not make my friends feel alienated or condemned because of my beliefs about Christ, morality, the church, etc. It is hard, but I have been pretty successful at it. I will list some of the great advantages of having "one foot in the church and one foot in the world."

You can set an inconsistent example for non-believers. I always find this beneficial. You see, since people already know that I am bound to sin, then there is no reason for me to make an attempt of setting a righteous example for them. There really is no real benefit for me to let my light shine all the time (Matthew 5:16), other than glorifying God. Also, what I believe should not really have much of an effect on how I live. If I show others how God condemns alcohol but I still go to parties with drinking, that's really no big deal. Try setting an inconsistent example! It really works if you want to let others know that your service to Christ is lukewarm (Revelation 3:14-15).

You can have the best of both worlds. There is nothing like a good church luncheon! All of the great food and koinonia are very encouraging. Also, there's nothing like lunch at work! All of the great food and profane language always give me a good chuckle and a full stomach. I love to straddle the fence, even though the devil owns the fence (cf. 1 Kings 18:21).

You can feel guilty when others compliment you on your good example for Christ. One day a sister in my congregation came to me to compliment on all the good works I am involved in for the Lord. I left that conversation saying to myself, "If you only knew the REAL me." Deceiving others is an art that I have almost mastered, and that I am not ready to give up yet. I love being a white-washed tomb (beatiful on the outside but full of dead bones)! After a while though, I stopped feeling guilty for my double life because it has become so much a part of my life.

You can serve God at your own convenience. This is probably the greatest benefit. See, fully-devoted Christians have to serve God with their whole life, while I only have to serve Him with part of mine. This reminds me of the story of a certain tribe of Gauls who were converted by missionaries from Rome after their military submission by Roman Legions. They agreed to be baptized in the river that bordered their land. One by one they marched into the river to receive baptism, but as each warrior went under the water, he held up one arm. It was the sword arm. They were converted, but only partially. The sword arm was reserved for use against Rome! How could God really expect "complete devotion" from us? What an outrageous idea!

There are so many benefits to living a double life. There is not even enough room on this page alone to contain it! I love being able to defer others away from heaven by my bad example and would have it no other way.

Side note: This article is a form of satire, but its content rings true with the attitude of many "two-faced" Christians. Jesus gave an excellent commentary on this wretched lifestyle when He said, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other" (Matthew 6:24). Even though in context the Savior was addressing money, this principle is applicable to every Christian's life as a whole. Jesus also condemned the Pharisees for being hypocrites and, "whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness" (Matthew 23:27).

May we never live a double life!

God Uses Suffering....

To make His children humble. Paul could have bragged. Paul could have boasted. He could have seen his unique relationship with God as point of pride, but God used it to humble him. He says, however, that a thorn was given for his flesh to prevent him from being conceited (2 Corinthians 12:7). That thorn was given to Paul to kill every proud tendency that he would ever have.

God uses pain for us in a similar way. When we feel like we have reached a spiritual climax, and are convinced that we have our many blessings because we deserve them, God allows us to endure pain and suffering in order to "bring us down a notch". God requires that His servants be humble, because He "opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6).

To draw us to Himself. The old gospel song puts it this way, "Where could I go but to the Lord?" When we face hard times, seemingly, the default Person to turn to is God. When Paul was confronted with his thorn for the flesh, he prayed three times (2 Corinthians 12:8). Profound suffering has a positive on a Christian's private prayer life. Heavenly Father should be the first One we consult when we are facing rough times in life.

To display His grace. When life is "running smoothly", it is a temptation to have confidence in one's self. But, increased grace on God's part, increases our confindence and assirance in Him. Jesus told Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9a). God's grace proves itself when we are faced with overwhelming difficulties. When confronted with "affliction and wanderings", Jeremiah said this about God's grace, "His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning" (cf. Lamentations 3:19-23). God's grace is seen in my suffering!

Christianity - Pure and Simple

Have you ever thought about following Jesus without being a part of any denomination? If you have, you are surely not alone.

I wonder why people just don't get it. I wonder why it took me so long to "get it". I wonder why we can't understand the simple concept of following Jesus....only. Without creeds. Without traditions. Without man-made interpretations. Just Jesus. Just His Word.

For some, this idea is outrageous, if not somewhat offensive.

For some odd-ball reason, we are caught up in the idea that in order for someone to be a Christian, he must automatically be a part of some denomination. The root of this problem is what I like to call BUFFET RELIGION. It is the idea that we can simply pick and choose which religion we like, and God is pleased with such. God's Word teaches contrary to that idea though.

Twenty centuries ago, the known world was shaken by the pure religion of Christ. It was shaken by people who were just Christians. The world was not "turned upside down" by a denomination, or a man-made church. The world was tossed up by followers of Jesus. Period.

They went about preaching a revolutionary message. A message of hope, forgiveness, love, and understanding. They lived lives of purity that reflected the good news about Christ. They patiently awaited His return, and died in expectation of a glorious meeting with Him.

They did not practice BUFFET RELIGION, but simply served God from hearts that wanted to please Him. They practiced pure and undefiled religion without wavering. No creeds. No confessionals. No constitutions or conventions. No synods.

Just Christ.

Just His Word.

"Oh! If only things could be that way today!", you may say. Well, actually friend, it can be. Through a simple study of Acts, you can find people who live the same way Christians did nearly two thousand years ago. Read Acts, and identify that group of people today.

Parting Words

What would you tell your family and friends if you knew you only had two days left to live? Maybe you would encourage to obey the gospel. Maybe you would encourage them to live faithfully to the Lord and His cause. Maybe you would admonish them to always trust in God, no matter what. Peter the apostle was in a circumstance similar to the one mentioned above. He knew that the putting off of his body would be soon, so he left words for Christians to recall even after his departure from this life (2 Peter 1:14-15). In this essay, we will examine very important messages Peter left with us in his final inspired letter.

Make your calling and election sure

Peter opened his second letter assuring Christians that all things related to life and godliness has been provided through the knowledge of Jesus Christ (1:3). In this one statement, he allows us a glimpse into an underlying theme of his letter: The word of Christ is valuable and must be guarded. In God's provision of all things pertaining to life and godliness, He has made sure that His children never have to look to other sources for anything. Because of this fact, Peter admonishes believers to supplement faith with virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love (1:5-7). He assures us that those who continue to grow in Christ will never be unfruitful or ineffective in the knowledge of Jesus, and will never fall (1:8) What assurance we have in a God-centered life! For a Christian who keeps on adding these qualities to his life, an eternal inheritance is waiting for him in heaven with God.

The Basis of Your Calling and Election: The Prophetic Word

Right off the bat, Peter makes sure that Christians understand that their faith is not based on cleverly devised stories (1:16), but on actual evidence. Peter even states that he himself was an eyewitness of the Majestic Glory of Jesus Christ on the the holy mountain. Some would have us believe though, that the Bible is just a collection of mystical fairy tales. Peter affirms the contrary! Further on, he states that the prophetic word does not originate with men, but with the Holy Spirit (1:20-21). This also reminds us of what Paul said about this very same subject (cf. 1 Cor. 2:13; 1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).

Watch out for false teachers, they will try to snatch the word out of your life

Peter informs his readers of the imminent danger of false teachers and their treacherous influence. He also assures them that there will be many who will follow after their falsehoods, ultimately being drawn away from the Master. He goes on to cite examples of those who were ungodly and were deceived into wickedness. First, he notes the angels who were sent into gloomy darkness. He then brings to mind the people of Noah's day and how they deluged. Peter then reminds us of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and how Jehovah destroyed them because of their lewdness.

In these examples though, the inspired apostle assures Christians that Noah and Lot did not give in to the pressures of ungodliness. They did, however, combat it with uprightness and faithfulness toward God. This is, my friend, very encouraging to those who are living "self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age" (Titus 2:12). Peter encourages the godly at the end of all of these sinful examples, by saying, "the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment" (2 Peter 2:9). What an awesome promise!

One of the saddest illustrations given in all the Bible is found in this short letter. After addressing the despicable situation of those who are ungodly, Peter introduces a special group of people. He describes them as those who have escaped the defilements of the world, but have become entangled in them once again. He says the, "last state has become worse for them than the first" (2:20). Peter continues,

For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire" (2:21-22).

What a sad condition! Imagine inheriting a mansion, but returning to a shack. What lack of wisdom and appreciation! This is the state of Christians who have been obtained by the blood of Jesus, but refuse to live therein. May we never return to our former desires!

The day of judgment IS coming

Peter ends his final letter by reminding us all of the coming judgment (3:1-3). In this chapter, he discusses those who scoff at the coming of Christ by saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation". Peter responds to their nonsense by stating, "the earth was formed out of water and through waterby the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly" (3:4-6).

Peter reveals that many will see ETERNAL DESTRUCTION at the return of the Lord. He also brings out the point that instead of scoffing at the coming of Jesus, we should consider His patience as salvation, because God wants all people to reach repentance (3:8-9). After discussing the fact that the earth and all it contains will be dissolved, this important question is posed: WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE OUGHT YOU TO BE IN LIVES OF HOLINESS AND GODLINESS? (3:11b).

So, the wise apostle of the Lord concludes his letter with words of admonition, encouragement, and praise:

"You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. So be it!"

What do you base your religion on?

What is your response to this question? Think long and hard on this important query. When this question is posed, you should answer honestly in your heart of hearts. What really drives your faith? What is the rule or set of rules that guide your daily life? As we ponder these things together, please maintain an open mind.

Traditions of men

When I think of tradition, I think of things like gathering around a fire on Christmas Eve, or eating chicken and dressing at my grandmother's home on Thanksgiving afternoon. These are events that hold a dear place in my heart. These are traditions that I will forever cherish. It is easy then, to understand why so many people take their traditions in religion and make them as binding as the word of God.

See, tradition is comfortable. Tradition is easy. Tradition is convenient. When you live by tradition, you do not have to think very much. However, when tradition takes precedence over Scripture, there is a deep problem. Jesus said, "<woj style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;</woj> <woj style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'</woj> You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men" (Mark 7:6-8).

Tradition, though, is not in and of itself bad. Paul reminded the Christians at Corinth and Thessalonica to "hold to" and "maintain" that he had passed on to them (cf. 1 Cor. 11:2; 2 Thess. 2:15). The issue comes in, though, when our traditions transgresses the flawless and perfect word of God. Tradition is not a good substitute for God's will. First, tradition did not originate with the Spirit (John 16:13). Second, we will not be judged by our traditions when we die (John 12:48). Third, tradition is not a firm foundation to build faith on (Romans 10:17; 1 Cor. 3:11). May we never "leave the commandments" in order to pursue that which is not from God.

False knowledge

Some have had said in their own ignorance, "I may not know much Bible, but I know a lot about my Jesus!" First of all, one must know the Scriptures in order to become "wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim. 3:15). Second, God has revealed who Jesus is through the written word. Third, we must know what the written word says about Jesus in order to live like Him.

If our knowledge is based somewhat upon what the word of God teaches, we have an unreliable and easily-tossed faith (Ephesians 4:13-15). Our foundation of knowledge must be built in the unshakable and indestructible word of the living God (Hebrews 4:12; James 1:21-22). There is no source outside of the perfect word truth that can inform us on how to make heaven our eternal destination.

A knowledge that is not based upon the Bible is not really any knowledge at all. Paul commanded Timothy to, "Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge' " (1 Timothy 6:20). God wants us to all be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth, in its purity and accurateness (1 Timothy 2:4). May we commit our lives to and base our faith on true knowledge.

Perfect word of truth

Earlier today, I had the opportunity to talk with representatives of a certain religious group. They are of the conviction that God's word is indeed perfect, but the Bible is not the only book that reveals that perfect word of God. How is consistent with what the Scriptures teach? You tell me!

Throughout the Scriptures, we read of its divine origins. David said, "The Spirit of the LORD speaks by me; his word is on my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken" (2 Samuel 23:2-3a). Jesus called the word of God "truth" (John 17:17). James called it the "perfect law of liberty" (James 1:25). Peter called it the word that "remains forever" (1 Peter 1:25). Paul called the Scripture that which makes us, "competent, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:17).

The word of God is practical, preachable, sagacious, liveable, all-sufficient, and unaltered. It should ever be our source of faith and practice. Why would we seek to look anywhere else for guidance? Listen to Peter's great question that he posed to the great answer-Giver, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). His words ring true nearly two thousand years later! May God's word always be our words to live by!

Simply Christian - Community

One important feature of the first century Christians, is their sense of community. They cried together. They laughed together. They prayed and sang together. They ate together (cf. Acts 2:46). They probably kept each others' children and watched each others' homes when one was out of town. They were truly the model community. They were simply Christian in their relationship with each other.

Shaped by the cross

This closeness was made possible only through the shed blood of Jesus. Only because of Christ, Christians are brought near to the blood, made one, reconciled, and have access in one Spirit (cf. Ephesians 2:11-22). What a bond! At Christ's death, those who were once not a people have become a people.

Because the cross is the center of the church's life together, it makes forgiving others and looking over each others' faults more easy. Also, it helps us to encourage others to come out of sin. One song puts it this way, "Finding our forgiveness here, we in turn forgive all wrongs."

Sharing in all things

This quality was exemplified by the early disciples. Luke wrote that, "they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need" (Acts 2:45). Not only did they share in their physical possessions, but they shared spiritually. Paul told one congregation to,

"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited" (Romans 12:12-16).

What a challenge! Contributing to the saints. Being flexible to the needs of others. Living in harmony. Burying our proud under a mound of humility in regards to one another. That is why the early Christians were so close. They had lots of common experiences. They did not need a bulletin to alert each other of sickness in the church. They knew each other!

Showing honor and hospitality

Paul also said this: "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor" (Romans 12:10). That takes an attitude of humility and service. But isn't that the example that the Savior left for us? He seemed more comfortable with a towel and basin than with a scepter and crown. He told His apostles, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:25-26). He knew how much of a major role service and showing honor would play in His kingdom of saved people.

Another unique feature of the New Testament church was their hospitality. The Book of Acts is saturated with references to Christians meeting in each others' homes for meals, worship, encouragement, and learning. The home was the center of church life for the first two centuries of the Christian era. Church buildings were not constructed until the "conversion" of Constantine to "Christianity". This is when the church started being identified with a building rather than the people. They knew nothing of the spectator-like auditoriums that we meet in today.

The challenge set before us

They were in each others' homes and involved in each others' lives. They knew that they had better get used to one another because they would be spending eternity together. They recognized their common love for each other, their common gift to the Savior, and their common bond that held them to the Lord. They also had a common strength when they were weary, common hope for the future, and a common joy in the truth of God's word.

May we copy their sense of community and togetherness!

Simply Christian - At the Cross

The cross of Jesus Christ stands at the epicenter of authentic Christianity. Some wear some form of it around their necks, while others have it displayed in their church buildings. However you the cross, it has had a profound affect on humanity from the time the Savior hang there nearly two thousand years ago.

Shaped by His cross

In the first century, Christians knew the significance of Christ's cross and His death on it. They knew that because of the cross they had been reconciled to God and brought to one another (Ephesians 2:14-16). Through Jesus' ransom on that cruel tree, forgiveness and purpose are found and shared in His body of saved people. Christians today are reminded of the Savior's terrible death every first week day when we assemble at the foot of the cross, around the Lord's table. The Christians in the first century kept that Memorial also (cf. Matthew 26:26-28; Acts 20:7).

The cross shapes every aspect of Christian life. Our relationships, work ethics, attitudes, and sense of gratitude should always be fashioned by what Jesus did for us on Calvary. This was true of the early saints. They preached the cross faithfully. They remembered the cross weekly. They lived the cross daily.

The cross is humbling

At no other point in time should we be ashamed. As we stand at the foot of the cross, we recognize why Jesus was there: Because of me. My sin. My lies. My jealousy. My pride. My envy. My bad attitude. All of those things (and many more), put Jesus on the cross. Our imperfections, flaws, and short-comings are all realized at the cross.

In the pure religion of Christ, there is absolutely no place for pride or boasting. Without Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross, there would be no forgiveness or redemption. There would be no eternal life. There would be no hope. Paul said this concerning the cross, "But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world" (Galatians 6:14). There is no place of baosting at the foot of the cross

What the cross means

Reconciliation. Through the cross of Christ, as we mentioned before, we are reconciled to God and brought together as the church. Broken relationships are mended at the cross of Jesus.

Love. The cross is the ultimate demonstration of God's affection for us. Paul told the Christians at Rome, "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). At the cross we encounter God's love. And, we reflect His love to others.

Relief. For the burdened, guilty, and sin-stained soul, the cross is a breath of fresh air. It is the place where the yoke of sin is lifted and one is made free to be a servant of righteousness (cf. Romans 6:14-18). On the cross, Jesus figuratively had His arms stretched out saying, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matt. 11:28-30).

The cross is so important in putting true Christianity in perspective. It reminds disciples where we have been, and where we are going. It reminds of a Savior's victory over sin. It tells of His wondrous grace and mercy. When we forget about the cross, we forget about what our religion is all about.

May we always be people who are appreciative of the cross!

Simply Christian - An Intro

There are many roadblocks to adequately explaining New Testament Christianity to others. One of the main roadblocks is the fact that most people who claim to follow Christ are split into various denominations and sects. Because this is so common, people have the idea that it is absolutely impossible to be a Christian like they were twenty centuries ago. But not only in theory, but in fact, it is possible to go back before any denomination was ever established and be simply a Christian.

In this series of essays, we will explore this idea of being pre-denominational. We will attempt to tear layer after layer of creeds, prayer books, and erroneous teachings to return to the pure and simple teachings of Christ. These teachings have been revealed to us in the New Testament, and that will be our main source of study. First, we will examine the preservation of New Testament Christianity. After that, we will look at the practices of the early Christians. Finally, we will see what God's plan is for those who seek to restore the ancient faith in the present day.

I ask two things of you: open your Bible and your mind. Please put away your preconceived notions and ideas, and "receive with humility the word implanted which is able to save your souls" (James 1:21).

Christ in Isaiah

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon[d] his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this."
- Isaiah 9:1-7

"Who has believed what they heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected[b] by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?

And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors."
- Isaiah 53:1-12

"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion--to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified."
- Isaiah 61:1-4

"Please and Thank You" - Overcoming Rudeness

You have experienced it. I have experienced it. You open the door for a person at Wal-Mart or some other store, and they don't say "Thank you." You get mad and say, "People are so rude these days. It didn't use to be this way." This scenario has probably been replayed so many times in my life, that I almost expect others to be rude.

In other areas of life, rudeness tends to simply creep in. It is not obvious when it rears its ugly head. Usually, we become rude to those whom we are closest to. (Not intentionally though). It may begin with a husband and wife who have been married for five years. The husband has gotten so used to his wife's cooking that he fails to thank her for it any longer. On the other hand, his wife forgets to thank him for always taking the trash out. In their mind, those seemingly mundane chores are things that should be expected of one another.

And that is the scary and subtle story of rudeness, it sneaks in unexpectedly, leaving its recepient feeling unappreciated, and maybe even unloved.

The Bible informs us that love is "not rude" (1 Corinthians 13:5). A person who genuinely loving is polite, generous, and shows honor to those who are engaged in a good work. Rudeness has no part in a growing Christian's life.

Practical suggestions regarding rudeness

Do not take others for granted. This is one of the hardest challenges of overcoming rudeness. Much of the time, rudeness is totally unintentional. Sometimes rudeness develops out of an attitude of "That's their job anyway." But if we take on an attitude of gratitude and humility, it will become far harder to devalue others for their kind gestures. - Philippians 2:1-5

Determine to be polite, no matter what. In some circumstances, rudeness develops in retaliation to more rudeness. I don't know how many times I have heard people say, "you're welcome" just because someone failed to say"thank you." Are they accomplishing anything by imitating the rudeness of others. Show kindness and gentleness to all, even if they don't show it in return. - Matthew 5:39-44

God wants His people to be thoughtful and considerate. He is a Father who loves His children and is a practitioner of what He expects of us. He was thoughtful enough to send His Son. We should be thoughtful enough to reflect that love and consideration to others.

Be <s>rude</s> polite.

"You Can't Have It, That's Mine!!" - Overcoming Selfishness

He had a problem. He had lots of things, but he wasn't using them correctly. He had so many things, that he had to build extra room to hold the things in. He was so content with his things, that he said to himself, "you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry". But then, it all came to an end. His "soul was required of him". His life was over. He had been selfish (cf. Luke 12:13-21).

The sad part of this man's story is that he had so much, yet never used it. He was selfish with his possessions. They could have gone toward much good, and brought so much joy to the less-forunate, but he kept it all to himself. He loved acquiring things rather than giving things away. What a miserable life!

Sometimes, we find ourselves in that same predicament. Selfishness was not confined to that rich fool, but is active in many lives even today. Selfishness manifests itself when we refuse to give time to Bible study, prayer, encouragement of weak brethren, money to the congregation, the less-fortunate, etc. Selfishness is indeed a handicap to living a full and abundant life in Christ.

God's Sefishness

Imagine if God was selfish. There would be no air to breath or food to eat. Life would be bland. It would be hopeless. Life as we know it would be non-existent. If God was selfish, there would have been no Savior to give His life for us. God gave (John 3:16). He did not hold back in giving the gift of His Son. Imagine if He had done so!

God is not one to hold back blessings or time for His children. He is the Giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). He allows us rain and other blessings to help sustain our physical lives. To group God and selfishness together in one sentence is an oxymoron. God is totally unselfish, and we should imitate Him in that regard.

Our Selfishness

Selfishness can be very subtle, almost totally unnoticeable. But, it is a hindrance to a Christian's spiritual growth and development. Paul stated that love does not "insist on it own way", but is generous and benevolent (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:5; 1 Timothy 6:17-19). Love is willing to give of itself, and never ask for anything in return. Selfishness is unloving, harsh, cold, ungrateful, and full of hatred. It is self-centered, and never God-centered.

God does not tolerate our selfishness, and He has the right no to! Why? Because He only requires what He Himself is already doing.

Applying Unselfishness

Be a grateful person. There is no greater combatant of selfishness than gratitude. Paul admonishes us to "give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). A person who counts his many blessings (i.e. family, friends, material possessions, salvation, Christ, the church), will never have a prroblem being giving and unselfish. "Forget not all His benefits' (Psalm 103:2).

Do not take life for granted. Isn't that what the rich fool did? At the very moment that he forgot about the uncertainty of life, his "soul was required of him". Life is totally unceertain, therfore, we should always live it as if it is our very last (cf. James 4:14-15). This means never heaping for ourselves vast amounts of material things that will never go to use.

Heavenly Father wants us to be a people who practice giving, thanksgiving, and forgiving. He wants us to give of our time, energy, and abilities unselfishly. Why? Because He unselfishly gives His for us. What more (or less) could He ask of us?

Be <s>selfish</s> unselfish.

Serve God.....Now!

In the course of a conversation with a friend, we touched on the subject of the unpredictability of life. Her words were that we should always live for today, because we are really unsure about tomorrow. What truth in such few words! Let's disect her words for a short bit.

"Yesterday is Gone"

Sometimes it is very hard not to live yesterday. We live in yesterday's worries, fears, insecurities, guilt, and shame. It is so easy to dwell on who we once were, instead of who God wants us to be now. The past can hurt. Much of time when we dwell on our past, we relive the hurt.

Obviously Christians in the first century also struggled with their former lives of sin. Paul assured them that they had been washed from their past sins (1 Corinthians 6:11), that they were a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that God wanted them to "put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24). What comfort there is in knowing that we don't have to live yesterday!

"Live For Him....Today"

Paul also stated that, "now is the favorable time; now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2). Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Now. This is hard to realize, is it not? Today is the only day that we are assured of (and today is not even promised to end). Now is the time to serve Him. Now is the time to be faithful. Now is the time to obey the gospel.

You may have heard folks say, "Well I'll get to that work next year when things aren't as hectic" or "I'm waiting to obey the gospel when I'm not so involved in sin". What presumptuous statements! Never take God's love and grace for granted!

"Tomorrow is Not Promised"

This was not the attitude of the rich fool. His rationale was "I have plenty of time to relax, eat, drink, and be merry (Luke 12:18-20). However, he realized something totally different when he suddenly died!

We must all meet God in judgment, one day (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:10; Hebrews 9:27). As I stand before him as an individual, I will give an acoount for my life, not anyone else's. But when will that day be? Jesus said that no one knows (Matthew 24:36). Either I will die first, or the Savior will return first. I really do not know.

That is why it is of utmost importance to live for Christ right now, today, this very moment, this very minute, this very second.

It's Ok to Be a Christian...And Single

One of the greatest challenges of being a Christian (for me at least) is not always being able to say what I really want to. But this time, I will.

If you haven't noticed, being a youth in churches of Christ is filled with lots of "unspoken pressures". One of those unspoken pressures is dating. Everywhere you look, seemingly inside and outside of the Lord's church, people are paring up. Is this natural? Yes. Is it required of us? No.

God made Eve for Adam because he was in need of that unique partnership in life. Heavenly Father made her as a "helper suitable" for Adam. He saw the need in Adam's life, and fulfilled it by providing him with a wife. How thoughtful of God!

As human beings, we are in need of food and clothing. As social beings, we are in need of a sense of belonging and close relaionships. I do not deny those two very basic facts. It is a natural part of the life process.

But singleness? Is it acceptable? Is it natural? Is it justifiable? Is it emotionally and spiritually healthy? For some reason, I was convinced that to be single is a death sentence to the nth degree. But...it's not.

Paul was single

He was a great man of faith who took a strong stand for God. He used his singleness to bring glory to God (1 Cor. 10:31). He used his singleness to go about strengthening the congregations. He was not distracted by a family. His priorities were not divided. He was content.

He was single

But did his singleness mean loneliness? By no means! He had acquired a family in the Lord (cf. Romans 16:13; 1 Timothy 1:8). As a Christian, Paul was a brother, father, and son. Though he was single, he had obtained the greatest heritage in history: the church. He had found countless mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters. He was single, but not lonely!

Don't look down on the single ones

Marriage - as we noticed from the beginning - is a divine arrangement, bringing man and woman together in a life-long committed relationship. It is a big step. It is not to be taken lightly. Never though, in the Scriptures, are Christians given a general comand to marry. Christians are taught how to be excellent spouses (cf. Ephesians 5:20-25), but are never required to marry. (Except in the case of overseers and special servants - 1 Timothy 3:1-13).

So for those among us who do not date, and don't plan to marry, show them respect. Value them for their singleness, and include them in various Christian social activities. Don't make them feel awkward by always mentioning your "significant other". Be thoughtful of their choice to live alone.

P.S. Don't ask people who they are dating. It's none of your business. If they choose not to date, that is THEIR decision, not yours.

A Lost Virtue

If you haven't noticed by now, we live in a very loose society. In particular, though, society's standards for modesty has dropped to an uncomfortable low. What at one time may have been considered "too revealing" has now been termed "not revealing enough". What once was considered underwear has now become outerwear. But, does it really matter what society's standard of modesty is? Not really. Why? Because God's standard for modesty and nakedness has never changed.

Adam and Eve

They had sinned. They had brought shame into their lives. They had dissapointed their heavenly Father. They had fallen out of their right relationship with Him. But only after this did they recognize their nakedness (Genesis 2:25; 3:6-7). So in order to "remedy" their new-found shame, Adam and his wife made for themselves loincloths. Obviously they were convinced that loincloths would be enough "covering". God didn't feel the same way. Because of this, He made for them garments of skin and "clothed them" (Genesis 3:21). Since this was the insance that God clothed them, that means that God did not consider their loincloths as adequate covering.

Some would have us believe that bikinis are acceptable in mixed swimming and as casual wear on hot summer days. But what is God's definition of "clothed"? It must be different from the majority of Americans'!

The Aaronic priests

An interesting and rather minute instruction is given by God to Moses. Jehovah commands that Aaron and his preistly descendants wear linen undergarments that would cover their naked flesh, from their thighs to hips (Exodus 28:40-43). God made sure that when they would fulfill their priestly duties in the tent of meeting, that their flesh would not be exposed to anyone. What a preventive measure for a potentially lustful situation!

Christians

In the New Covenant, God gives further instruction to His people concerning modesty. He said through Paul that Christian women should, "adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness--with good works" (1 Timothy 2:9-10). Through Peter He said, "Do not let your adorning be external--the braiding of hair, the wearing of gold, or the putting on of clothing--but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious" (1 Peter 3:3-4).

What did you notice about those two passages? God wants His people to focus more on inward modesty than outer. Is this to say that outward modesty is unimportant? NO! It is to say, though, that a woman who is modest in her heart will allow her external clothing to follow suit.

God's standard of modesty has never changed. He still expects those who are His children and who hold His priesthood to dress appropriately (cf. 1 Peter 2:9). Because Christians are called to live according to a higher standard, God expects us to not conform to the low standards and lusts of this world (1 Peter 1:14-15). He calls us to be holy as He is holy. This holiness affects our language, our worship, and among other things, our dress. Please, let's not dissappoint God with your wardrobe, because His Son wore our sins on His body.

"I suppose I could bear to sweat a bit for Christ"

This was the statement of a beloved Christian sister in an online discussion on foreign missions. We were talking about the inconveniencies that would be faced by Christians serving in a preaching work in a foreign land. What would life without AC, electricity, electronics, running water, etc? Different? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

But on a more personal note, isn't that the theme of New Testament Christianity, losing all to gain Christ (Philippians 3:7-8)? "Bearing the sweat" of ridicule, broken relationships, giving up pleasurable sinful living, false religion is only a small sacrifice compared the ultimate sacrifice that Christ offered at the cross (Hebrews 9:25-26). The Christian life is indeed diffficult to live (Matthew 7:13-14), but with God's help and care, it is possible (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Jesus demands that His followers be prepared to give up the "comfort zones" of life in order to serve Him. He is not pleased with a religion that does not require self-denial and sacrifice. One pre-requisite to following Christ is to deny self and take up one's cross daily (Luke 9:23-26). In the first century Roman Empire, a cross was not a symbol to wear around one's neck or an ornament to place above one's dashboard. The cross was a means of execution, a torture stake, a mark of shame. Christ bore His cross first, therefore He expects of His people to do the same.

In the garden, Christ's head shed sweat and blood as He prayed to heavenly Father. In pain and agony, He realized the price that He was about to pay for your sins and mine. Is it too much that He require that we "bear to sweat a bit for Christ"?

My Sisters, God's Daughters

They don't seek out for human glory,
but give their all to God in humility.

They don't speak out on social issues,
but speak up in Bible class.

They don't sing the songs of the world,
but sing songs of praise to their Father,

They don't wear the latest fashion trends,
but in quiet modesty profess godliness.

They teach their children to be courteous.

They wash their husbands' clothes,

They wake up early and stay up late,

Because to God they fulfill their righteous oaths.

Without these women, where would the church be?

For these Christian women make the best black eye peas!

But their worth is not in their food, fashion, or flowers,
but in their relationship with their Father.

They are daughters of the Most High......I am proud that they are my sisters.

Note: Many people look down on churches of Christ because of our stance on the role of women. However, it is not our stance, but it is God's (1 Timothy 2:9-14; 1 Corinthians 14:34). Women in churches of Christ are held in high esteem. Without women, there would be no overseers or deacons (1 Timothy 3:2, 12). Without women, there would have been no Timothy (2 Timothy 2:15). Christian women are of great value as mothers and keepers of the home (Titus 2:4-6). Every faithful Christian can attest to the wonderful influence of at least one godly woman in their life. I know that I would not be the person I am today without all the righteous women in my life. I am indeed grateful for them and their work.

Holy Holy Holy

Some say that love is God's chief attribute.
Obviously the seraphim disagreed.
In the temple, they did not say "love love love".

Others may say that God's chief attribute is justice.
Obviously, the seraphim disagreed.
You see, in the temple, they did no say "justice times three".

Some hold to the view that grace is God's chief attribute.
Obviously the seraphim disagreed.
In the temple, they did not shout "grace, grace, grace".

"So", you may ask, "what is God's chief attribute?"
On this the seraphs did agree.
With their lips they proclaimed, "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!"

Note: Jehovah is a God of love (1 John 4:8), justice (Psalm 9:7), and grace (Titus 2:11-12). They knew that He was their King and Lord (Revelation 19:15). As His people, they served as His visible body on earth. As the church, God's eternal purpose - of reconciling Jews and Gentiles into one body - was realized (Ephesians 2:11-16; 3:10-11).

Since the church then and now was made up of human beings, the Savior left an adequate pattern for Christians to be structured by. This pattern helps the church grow in spiritual maturity and physical numbers. We will look at that pattern - the New Testament - and realize God's plan of organization for His people.

In the first place, God never insituted a higher body than the local congregation of Christians. There were no synods, official councils, college of cardinals, or any other ecclesiastical hiearchy. God never established a para-church organization. If anyone today is engaged in such, he or she is a part of something that the Lord never intended.

In the local congregation though, God did appoint overseers to see to the spiritual welfare of individual Christians in that congregation, not in another. Paul and others appointed "elders in every congregation". It was a very serious occaision, for they did so with "prayer and fasting" (Acts 14:23-24).

When writing about the various role of overseers in the local congregation, New Testament writers used several descriptive terms. When mentioning spiritual maturity, they are called elders (Acts 20:17; 1 Timothy 5:17). This term indicates that men who are overseers are of the highest spiritual quality (Titus 1:5-9). Also, they are called shepherds. Paul told the elders of the Ephesus congregation to pay careful attention to themselves and the flock that God had put them over (Acts 20:28). Peter told elders to "shepherd the flock of God that is among you" (1 Peter 5:2). Just as real sheep have a trusting bond with their shepherd, so Christians have love for their overseers. Why? Because those who lead us must do so as if they were giving an account (cf. Hebrews 13:17).

New Testament Christians were also served in the local congregation by men called deacons. This term comes from a Greek word that means servant or minister. All Christians are servants (cf. 1 Peter 2:16), but God has designated a special group of men in the local congregation for that noble work. Like overseers, deacons must likewise meet certain spiritual qualifications (cf. 1 Timothy 3:8-13). Even though there is no clergy class among Christians, deacons are subject to elders. Just as the rest of the congregation, deacons work under the oversight of shepherds. There really is no example of men in the New Testament meeting the 1 Timothy 3 requirements, but there is an example of seven men being appointed to serve the Lord's people because of a special need (Acts 6:1-7).

Because deacons are subject to elders, they are given special assignments by the eldership. It depends on the needs of the particular congregation, but works of deacons range from meetinghouse maintenance to VBS coordination. It really just depends on what the saints in the locale are in need of, much like the situation in Acts 6.

God has been so gracious to give us such an effective by which His church can grow in spiritual maturity (cf. Ephesians 4:11-14; 2 Peter 3:18)!

Restoring the Ancient Faith - Organization (Part 1)

One unique feature of the religion of Christ is its simplicity in structure. Today, many religious groups have complex ecclesiastical hierarchies with synods, councils, committees, cardinals' colleges, and various other extra-Biblical innovations. Since God is a God of order (1 Cor. 14:40), He has left us a simple plan of how His people are to be structured, making His church functional and effective in the local community and around the world.

In the first place, Christians in the first century were led by Jesus Christ. It was He who purchased the church with His blood (Acts 20:28). It was He who gave the divine law for His disciples to live by from day to day (John 12:48). It was He who promised to assemble His called-out group of people in one body (Matthew 16:18). Therefore, Jesus Christ has every right to be the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22-23).

Christ never left the idea that He would leave a special representative of sorts on earth to make new laws or to bind certain rules on others. He has not endowed us with special gifts in order to receive "new light" or "new revelation". He has left us the Word of Truth in order for us to know His will, and also in order for us to obey His will. Friends, this is the way that Christ leads and guides His church today.

In the first century, Christ DID in fact delegate special authority to His apostles. They were to bind on earth what had already been bound in heaven (Matthew 16:16-20). They could only speak where God had given them the words Jesus promised those special men that everything that He spoke would be brought back into their memories (John 14:26; 16:13). What they wrote and spoke were indeed the Lord's commands (1 Corinthians 14:37).

In our next essay, we will look at who Christ has given authority to help in leading the church today.

Restoring the Ancient Faith - Authority

We are all ruled by something or someone. Whether it be our values or our favorite hobby, there is something that helps shape our daily activities and actions. The 1st century Christians wer no different. Luke wrote that the early disciples, "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers" (Acts 2:42). They were totally commited to the apostles' teaching (i.e. the Word of God), and were not ashamed.

Today, there are various teachings being perpetuated by self-professed Christians that are never found in the apostles' teaching, which we commonly call the New Testament. (Paul called these writings the "Lord's commandments" - 1 Corinthians 14:37). Many are appealing to self-made opinions and "doctrines of demons" to justify their sinful practices. But in genuine New Testament Christianity, you find nothing of that sort. In the New Testament, you read of Christians spreading the "seed of the kingdom" everywhere they went (cf. Luke 8:11; Acts 8:1-5).

This is true because they reconginzed and acknowledged the authority of Jesus Christ (cf. Matthew 28:18). He was their Lord, and they knew that the words that He spoke would be their standard at the personal and final judgment (cf. John 12:48). They didn't have "enough education" to out-smart the Savior, so they humbly submitted to His words as their measuring rod for everyday living.

They had no Methodist Discipline. They had no Catholic Catechism. They had no Baptist Manual. They had no Augsburg Confession of Faith. They devoted themselves to the gospel, the life-altering teaching that the apostles had been commanded by Jesus to proclaim (cf. Matthew 28:19; Romans 1:16). Peter said that the "word that remains forever" was the "good news that was preached to you" (1 Peter 1:22-25). The apostles preached the word, and people obeyed it as a result.

Paul said "whatever you do in word or action, do all by the authoriy of the Lord Jesus" (Colossians 3:17). He recognized Christ's authority, and encouraged other Christians to do the same. Peter told Christians to speak as if they were speaking God's utterances (cf. 1 Peter 4:11). They knew they couldn't go wrong. They knew that God is incapable of lying and that the truth, when obeyed and relied upon, would set sinners free from the bondage of sin. God's Word was in their mouths and demonstrated in their lives.

For further consideration, read 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 John 1:9-11; Jude 1:3; 2 Peter 1:20-21; James 1:21-22.
